3 Filipino Dining Superstitions

We, Filipinos, are believing to the superstitions and omens. It seems like from our ancestors down to our generation, these omens and superstitions continue to lived. Some of the superstitions we believed in:

1. Dropping of utensils means arrival of a visitor. No one really knows why fallen utensils are omens for unexpected visitors. It is very common belief in us and it seems other countries as well. If a fork falls, it means it’ll be a man while if it's a spoon, it'll be a woman who's coming to see you.

2. Don't clear the dining table unless everyone has finished eating. If you do, you already made the life of the last one unhappy. This was also a common omen for us. Mealtime is sacred. We, Filipinos are eating together while were eating, we're sharing experiences and it casts a certain bond all over us. Clearing the dishes before everyone is finished somehow breaks that magic, leaving whoever wasn’t done eating out of the loop, all by himself/herself will be forever alone permanently. It said that "clearing the table while a diner was still eating was akin to sentencing that person as a “leftover,” someone who was left on the plate while everyone else was picked up, so to speak".

3. Bringing home the food from the funeral is a bad luck. In the Philippines, we have plenty of traditions in burials due to our great respect for our dearly departed. The spirits of the dead are also thought to linger about the funeral, taking home anything from the event would be like inviting their ill luck over to your house.
